The Haven

This may sound ironic I know BUT my first meal out in the US was a highland dinner at ‘The Haven’, a Scottish Restaurant. A troop of us thought we would sample the cuisine and musky pub atmosphere. This is a gem of a restaurant planted right in the heart of Jamacia Plain, complete with delicious dishes including haggis and our American friends were surprisingly tempted by its taste.  Jason who has a wonderful personality and takes much pride in his establishment was thrilled to meet some fellow Scots and welcomed us to enjoy the live music. Cannot turn down a sing-along to ‘500 miles’!

The beginning of life in Boston

The plane door cranks open and the melting air hits me – Hello United Sates! Jeeps cruising around the airport field as people bustle about, laden with bags and sweltering with the afternoon sunshine! Customs are swift and the security checks are thoroughly time consuming but efficient.
My First impressions…

·         Tanned locals contrast my obviously Scottish milk bottle complexion

·         Everyone runs, good to know health awareness in big and you very rarely see a typical obese stereotype.

·         ‘America runs on Dunkin’

Olympic Torch Relay

A combination of talent displays and major celebrations marking the flames arrival in the Highland capital – Inverness, a milestone in the olympic relay.

The Olympic Torch is estimated to travel 8,000 miles around the UK and it is thought that 95 per cent of the population will be within a one hour journey time of the torch as it travels. It has caused quite a stir throughout the country and it is a fantastic opportunity to promote unity, show off the scenic UK landscapes and exhibit sporting aptitude.

I attended the Inverness concert which was a belter with music performed by a personal idol of mine Emelie Sande plus acrobatics and dance acts. Overall it highlighted how influential an event like this can be in boosting moral at a time when the country is suffering and in economic decline. It was a once in a lifetime experience having the torch in our hometown and I feel privileged to have been a part of something so monumental.

London

Hang up the bunting and wave your Union Jacks as we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. The festivities in London are immense and show an overwhelming sense of patriotism as Her Majesty the Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years as Britain's monarch.

I am lounging in St James Park. Today has been a killer – was airport bound in Glasgow for 5am and have been wondering around the city since I arrived trying to soak up the Jubilee ambiance through sleepy eyes! My adventure down to the capital is all in aid of my working visa for America so I thought I’d make a trip of it and stay for a couple of days. It’s crazy at the moment since the Olympics are fast approaching so the security has been stepped up to the MAXIMUM and there are British flags absolutely everywhere.
From sampling market street curries with Honey Davis to catching up with Fiona Youngsons antics, it was a worthwhile trip with plenty of excitement. The US Embassy was an intimidating experience with plenty of protocol but the famous iconic waxed cotton outerwear associated with the British countryside is obviously present in London contrasting the buzz of the city which rekindles my love for the capital.

Amsterdam

Living Young AND wild AND free
 la la laaaaa

Blitzed Amsterdam with my cheery girls in a SURGE of loopy antics.

Day 1
Laden with our luggage – rucksacks at the ready.

Late night flight into the buzzing city followed by a meddely of wrong trains, trams and metros resulted in the two of us looking like a lost pair of ‘Dora Explorers’ in the dingy DAM ghetto.

After words of wisdom from some spaced out locals ‘look for building with the blue, green and purple glowing lights’ – EVENTUALLY we found the plush hotel with a typical flower flooded Dutch garden and spacious room to collapse in.

Day 2
Juicy, delicious strawberries for breakkie from the fresh fruit market.
Strolled around the local surroundings and took a wander through the infamous VondlePark, past the Van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum attempting to get our bearings.
Manic traffic, scenic waterways, giant ducks, excessive bikes…

Carl Joined Nicole and I for the night to sample the city’s extraordinary pubs and clubs. A trip to the renowned Bulldog Coffee shop in the Leidsplein square was an experience.

Day 3
Dozey, dreamy – long lie in.

Blethering about the previous evenings escapades while moseying around the bustling streets, Dam Square, watching the dainty boats cruising, fountains, quirky squint buildings and generally soaking up the laid back European Essence.

With no less than 165 canals, I now understand why Amsterdam is noted as the ‘Venice of the North’
Pasta Salads and some hotel lounging.

Day 4
Checked out of hotel and into the ‘close for comfort’ bunk beds of the ‘Inner Amsterdam Hostel’.

Met the rest of the ladies as they trooped out of Central Station.

The city has the highest number of museums in all the cities of the world so our choice was endless but we picked the controversial option of The Sex Museum. This consisted of numerous erotic photographs and displays that highlighted the city’s nonchalant attitude towards sex. If you are a prude leave it alone but if you are open minded like me then it is worth a visit and certainly sets off the giggles.

Free ferry rides to the small islands – gigantic cruiser that dwarfed any onlookers – photographs posing on one of the infamous ‘IAMSTERDAM’ signs.

Social banter with some American lads and an Australian in the hostel – ended up trekking with them in an attempt to find the ‘ice bar’ but our navigation and timing went to pott. The twinkling bridge lights set a romantic feel and we ended up grabbing an overpriced beverage (typical thieving tactics of the city) on route back to the Hostel.

Day 5
Mcbikes – a cheap and efficient bike rental service allowed myself and the girls to resemble the VON TRAPP FAMILY as we peddled about the cycle lanes. Our little leggies spinning all day managed to cover an extensive mileage and visit some impressive sights.

The Anne Frank House – although we didn’t see the point in queuing for hours to get into the museum, it was quite a moving experience and grand dedication to her life. Hard to believe that the young diarist and her family managed to cope with living in such a cramped proximity while hiding from the Germans during World War Two.

Bagles and Beans – Lemon cheesecake and pastries were mouth-watering.

The Red Light District – over 500 windows worked by prostitutes in the medieval part of the city. Flooding with goggling tourists and potential customers the area was such a unique sight but a little disturbing at the same time. We witnessed an array of ladies seductively offering themselves to any passers while being closely watched by the rotund pimps, one of which has a humongous dog bearing its teeth – would NOT want to mess with him. All in all quite incredible.

Brownies – Amsterdam is well known for its smoky coffee shops which dispense drugs freely and you frequently observe people chilling out, puffing away and playing a random game of chess. While in the city we felt obliged to try the Hash Brownies together in the safety of our hostel room – took a while to kick in but ahhh what a night of absolute nonsense and cackling laughter.

Day 6
Pedaloes – Cheap and highly entertaining way of seeing the city from the water, although there were some near crashes.

Treated ourselves to pancakes – scrumptious with fruit, nutella and a dusting of icing sugar.

Sunbathing – soaking up some vitamin D resulting in an explosion of freckles.

Schiphol Airport bound – sat on the open air terrace while eating mangos and watching the planes take off. There were some interesting factual displays to read while passing the time and I learnt to my surprise that the airport is 4 meters below sea level. A night in true traveller style, crashed out on the Starbucks coaches while waiting for our flight back to bonnie Britain.

GlasgowLIFE – now in boxes

It’s a tearful end to a truly memorable tale. Our 2nd year flat has been completely nuts at times! Kellie and Nicole have been the perfect flat mates and we will be gutted to close the ‘Griffin’door’ behind us for the final time. The horrendously mingin’ stairwell that we have put up with, the restless sleep when the single glazed windows didn’t keep out the noise of ‘jakies’ shouting, the hole in my bedroom wall etc… can simply be overlooked. We couldn’t have asked for a better PAD to gather the BABS troops and conveniently be within strolling distance to uni. SO as mum and I carry my boxes full of stuff out to the car – I can reflect on the BEST bits!

The road to success is always under construction

My workload is mountainous for university at the moment as term time is coming to a close and deadlines are that FROSTING on the peak. I most definitely could be the PRO in procrastination so with a severe lack in motivation I am not even nearing the summit of this darn essay writing.

Red sky at night – Shepherds delight

If I can sum up my flat MATEY it three words it would be ‘a complete nutter’ but she is one of the most bubbly and openhearted gems I have ever met. So when she suggested an adventure to the rolling countryside of Ayrshire – I jumped at the chance of some FRESH AIR, horses and Robbie burns chat.
Kellie, Nicole and I sported the look of wellyboots clarted in Mud and frizzy sea salted hair for a glorious few days while dancing about the fields and baking under the stunning blue skies.

Day one –
Short bus trip followed by a delicious dinner in the Fairburn.
Arrival at Nicoles PAD – a quaint little country cottage which was just how I imagined, so homely!
A rapid stroll through the country lanes burnt off some of our dinner binge and the picturesque pink sky gave us hope for the following days weather forecast – red sky at night, shepherds delight.
Midgies completely munched us in a true Scottish bugg attack while we tucked the horses in for the night.

Day two –
Early rise.
Who needs to see the new 3D titanic film when we had planned a big bad ass ferry ride to the Isle of Arran haha.
In true backpacker style we took no maps, had no plan but laden with lunch… the hiking began as soon as we bounced off the boat. The fisherman beach walk trailed us ride through the centre of the jostling little golf course and to the summit of the GRAAAAND 13th century Brodick Castle and Gardens.
The six hours we spent exploring the little secluded island flew by and we even found the time to satisfy our inclination to sun bathe on the pier.

Day three –

Nothing beats a duvet day.
Moovies with the most welcoming McMahon family!
An enchanting riverside walk with the girls and Nicoles adorable dog Tessyy.
Ending a SUPERB trip with a tasty meal at the ‘Tree house’ restaurant in Ayr - There Millionaire Sundae was to die for!

Honeys 21st

Sooo splendid to have miss Honey Davis Wilkinson back in our midst for a couple of nights and a good excuse to have all the girls gathered in Glasgow for some well over due nonsense. It never fails to amaze me that no matter how long we are all separated for – NOTHING changes and when reunited it is always as much fun as it has been over the years.

It was an over emotional greeting when we surprised the birthday girl with a banner at the train station. She trudged along the platform not expecting anyone to meet her until she spotted us eagerly waiting. The dramatic, almost ‘ROM COM like’ scene quickly broke into a frenzy of us running, flinging bags down and all in all embarrassing ourselves in front of the unpredicted public audience. Honey was delighted and completely overwhelmed with the greeting! Smiles all round!

The weekend was an assortment of treats….
Bit of a boogie in buff club
“Drop it like its hawwwt” – Catriona
"Where have you been all my life” - Andrea

The feast
Marvellous spread of food – from stuffed mushrooms to stuffed tomatoes and pretty much everything STUFFED with goodness – WE WERE WELL AND TRULY SATISFIED.

Classic Cocktails

After the cinema was crammed to the brim and completely sold out – we were a little disappointed not to get our Channing Tatum FIXX on the big screen which he stars in his latest movie ’21 Jump Street’ (he really is the most beautiful gent). So instead I ventured to Mosquito on Bath Street for a couple of girly cocktails with Rosalind and her good friend Molly who is visiting Glasgow for the first from the USA.
It was such a great chance to chat with someone from the other side of the POND and get the lowww’dowwwn on American life as she prepped me for my big move to Boston in August. Very reassuring to know that such a smiley, bubbly character will only be a couple of hours away if I am in need of a familiar face when settling into the USA.
Toasted White Russian... EmilyEmily… Cosmo… Woowoo… Mango Daiquiri… Strawberry Mojito… Royal Flush – sampled each other’s choices after a couple of rounds and by the end of the night I was well and truly fuelled for my move to the States – 4months!!!
